Cineworld, which owns the biggest chain of movie theatres in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as U.S. second-biggest chain Regal Cinemas, is reportedly closing all of its theatres that have remained open or reopened this year. Ithaca's Regal Cinemas at the Shops at Ithaca Mall closed in March and has not reopened, though movie theatres in some areas have been able to.

As virus surges, bars and restaurants will close at 10pm nightly
"COVID is getting worse by the day. All around the country. The fall surge is here," said Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in a statement on Wednesday afternoon. New York State is taking the step of ordering establishments with state liquor licenses, including bars and restaurants, to close at 10pm beginning this Friday evening.

Once 24/7, Shortstop Deli will be open just six days a week for now
Every time we've published a roundup of holiday dining offerings, we've always been able to tell readers "Shortstop Deli is open. Shortstop is always open." That changed in 2020 with the Coronavirus pandemic, as the formerly 24/7 convenience store and deli was forced to reduce its hours. This weekend, Shortstop owner Chuck Dong announced the business will be "temporarily closed Sundays, due to the economic impact of COVID-19."

Stewart’s Shops will reach Ithaca as part of a deal with Blueox
Stewart's Shops will reach the Ithaca area later this year, as the 75-year-old chain of ice cream shops, convenience stores, and gas stations takes over a string of Blueox Neighborhood Market and Nice 'n Easy stores from Blueox Corporation. The Valero Nice 'n Easy Grocery Shop at the intersection of Route 13 and Route 366 near NYSEG will be rebranded as a Stewart Shop's location.

Ithaca’s first drive-through Starbucks is opening next week in Threshold Plaza
Ithaca has had two standalone Starbucks cafés since 2005, when they opened on busy corners in Downtown Ithaca and Collegetown, as well as partner locations inside Barnes & Noble in Ithaca's Southwest and Target at the Shops at Ithaca Mall. But Ithaca's very first drive-through Starbucks location has its grand opening next Monday, January 17th.

Lansing Market will close in December, the independent grocery confirms
The Lansing Market, an independent grocery store that opened 11 years ago at the intersection of North Triphammer and Peruville Roads, will close sometime in December, store officials confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. The impending closure was announced in a statement shared by Tompkins County legislator Mike Sigler.

New owner, new plan for Brews and Brats property north of Trumansburg
The owners of Brews and Brats at Autumn View announced last September that they'd accepted a purchase offer on the property, and the eatery on Route 96 just outside the Village of Trumansburg had closed. Monday night, the owners of New Park in Ithaca's northwest announced they'll be opening a new venue at "a new sister property called Cedarwood" in the Brews and Brats location.

Local Internet service pioneer Lightlink will close at the end of August
Following the death in December 2022 of founder Homer W. Smith, Lightlink, a local Internet service provider that has served the Ithaca and Central New York area since the dialup days of the mid 1990s, will shut down at the end of August 2023.
